The program aimed to establish a sustainable bioinformatics and data science research training program at USTTB, relevant to global health research for the African countries.
From 2017 to 2023, this collaborative research-training program between USTTB and Tulane University, sponsored by the NIH Fogarty International Center as part of the H3Africa initiative, provided bioinformatics and data science training to faculty and students at USTTB, focusing on advancing the USTTB bioinformatics curriculum, increasing faculty and student authorship in bioinformatics and data science journals, grant proposal development, and improving success in gaining extramural research funding.
This program included an exchange component featuring internships and summer school opportunities at Tulane University. Since 2018, the program has delivered annual Data science and Bioinformatics workshops at the ACE to foster growth in research education on computationally intensive topics including statistical programming, bioinformatics analyses, spatial data science, and database management.
1U2RTW010679-01 from 2017-23
West African Sustainable Leadership and Innovation Training in Bioinformatics Research (WASLITBRe), with Nigeria, Ghana and Mali.

The WASLITBRe was a collaborative program between Covenant University (CU), in Nigeria, USTTB, in Mali and KNUST, in Ghana, that was developed to support the H3Africa initiative. The program, carried out from 2017 to 2023 aimed to train MSc. / PhD, junior faculty (post doctorate) with the goal to produce a sustainable network of individuals well trained in various aspects of advanced bioinformatics and data science research, ready to assume leadership roles at academic, health care and research institutions in West Africa. The program conducted a six-week postgraduate workshop in Bioinformatics and Data Science at Covenant University, Nigeria, in 2018. Additionally, in 2022, it organized a specialized workshop on Grant Writing for Metagenomics at KNUST, Ghana.
H3ABioNet (Mali, UCT) from 2017-23
Pan African Bioinformatics Network for the Human Heredity and Health in Africa (H3Africa) consortium
H3ABioNet was established to develop bioinformatics capacity in Africa. Its mandate is to develop and roll out a coordinated bioinformatics research infrastructure that is tightly coupled to a sophisticated pan-African bioinformatics training program. H3ABioNet is developing human capacity through training and support for data analysis and facilitating access to informatics infrastructure by developing or providing access to pipelines and tools for human, microbiome and pathogen genomic data analysis (https://www.h3abionet.org/).
